Seed Phrase Backup — CRITICAL SECURITY
Loss of seed phrase results in permanent, irrecoverable loss of all associated assets.
Most Important Step in Cryptocurrency Custody. Your seed phrase is the sole master key to all wallets and funds. No company, no support team, no software can recover a lost seed phrase. Treat this with the same security as the keys to a physical vault.
How to Write Your Seed Phrase
DO
- Use permanent ink (ballpoint pen or marker)
- Write clearly in PRINT (not cursive)
- Include word numbers (order is critical)
- Test ink on scrap paper first
- Verify each word against the screen
- Record wallet name and creation date
DO NOT
- Use pencil (fades)
- Take a photo or screenshot
- Store in any digital format
- Email, text, or message to anyone
- Store in cloud, password manager, or notes app
Physical Storage — The 3-2-1 Backup Rule
- 3 copies of your seed phrase
- 2 different storage types (paper + metal engraving)
- 1 copy offsite (safety deposit box, trusted location)
Recommended Storage
- Fireproof safe (rated 1+ hour)
- Bank safety deposit box
- Metal seed storage plate (fire/flood resistant)
- Geographically separated locations
Verification After Backup
After writing your seed phrase, verify it immediately:
- Complete XColdPro's built-in seed verification challenge
- Perform a test recovery: restore the wallet from your paper backup on a separate device
- Verify the receiving address matches your original wallet
- Periodically check physical backups for legibility (annually)
Perform this verification before sending any significant funds to your wallet. A backup you haven't tested is a backup you can't trust.
